In terms of drought, 2009 is a year many Queenslanders won’t forget in a hurry. For Central Queensland beef producers Geoff and Alison Maynard of 5 Star Senepols, Mt Eugene, Jambin, it couldn’t have been a more challenging time for their cattle as the long dry stretched on and saw them only measure 20mm of summer rainfall for February/March. But out of the challenging conditions a selection of their cattle that was only yearlings in 2009 has returned some remarkable results in what is thought to be the first objective research into tenderness of the Senepol breed in Australia….
Mr Maynard said they were “surprised and delighted” to find the Senepol-sired steers had produced meat of very acceptable tenderness according to international standards for Warner Bratzler shear force.
